VNC (Virtual Network Computing)
is a remote display system that allows viewing of a computer's desktop from
anywhere on the Internet from a wide variety of machine architectures.
Using VNC
To see a desktop being shared using VNC, you will need to know the IP address
of the VNC Server to connect to and the password for the meeting. For CMCS,
this information will be supplied prior to each meeting via email and included
with meeting information posted to the
Team Calendar.
The desktop of a machine running a VNC server can be viewed using VNC
Viewer or a web browser. A web browser will be slower than VNC Viewer.
VNC Viewer
VNC Viewer can be downloaded from
http://www.realvnc.com/
After installing VNC, use VNC Viewer to connect to the VNC server
on the machine being shared.
-
Start VNC Viewer
-
Select "Options..."
-
IMPORTANT!!!
Click on "Shared (don't disconnect other viewers)"
If you don't do this, you will disconnect everyone else unless the
VNC Server has been configured to prevent this.
-
If you're not a presenter, check "View only (inputs ignored)"
-
Enter the IP address of the VNC server you want to connect to
-
Enter the password for the meeting
Web Browser
You may connect to the VNC Server using a web browser. However,
when you connect via a web browser, do NOT mouse around the desktop
in the browser window unless you are the presenter! Observe ONLY.
-
To connect to a Windows VNC Server, go to port 5800 (i.e. if the
IP address of the VNC Server you want to connect to is 146.246.246.145,
enter http://146.246.246.145:5800/)
-
Select "Options"
-
IMPORTANT!!!
Select "Yes" on "Share desktop"
If you don't do this, you will disconnect everyone else unless the
VNC Server has been configured to prevent this.
